More Adjusting Tank To LE Joint
Ok, so I read up on what could possibly be causing this problem. The likely culprits are:
1) Too much sealant at the outboard-most z-bracket-to-baffle-to-rib.
2) Too much sealant around the outboard-most rib on the inside of the tank skin.
3) Improperly drilled joint plate or improperly installed nutplates.
4) Installed tank sag in the spar, which pushes the leading edges together.
My first step was to remove some excess pro-seal that was on the tank skin just outboard of the rib. I then took the leading edge and tank and put them on the floor on a blanket and screwed them together. It came out a little better after that.
Here's another shot. You can see that it's still a little bowed out, but not really as bad. Please excuse the marred screw head. Last night we went back and forth putting the tank on and removing it.
And now between the forward most and second forward-most screws.
And from 'aft' looking 'forward'.
Update: 1:00 AM:
I was sitting here at the couch, doing further thinking, etc. about the problem....watching some stupid crap on TV about some goofy company that takes old airplane parts and turns them into furniture....whatever..
Anyway...I started sawing logs for a few minutes and when I woke up...I had a revelation......
It was one of those moments when builders start kicking themselves. I figured that by putting the bolts in the outboard-most z-bracket and torquing them down it would pull down the tank. The outboard-most z-bracket is of course attached to the outboard-most tank rib....which is attached to the skin just inboard of the attach joint. So....that's just what I did. And wouldn't you know it???? It lined up to the way it was when I originally drilled it. No, it's not perfect...but I don't aim for it to be. It's certainly acceptable to me now and I have no more concerns about this. Tomorrow...hmm....I mean later today I can go ahead and start on something else without this tank-to-leading edge crap racking my brain. I didn't get a picture of it but I'll try to remember to take one and post it here later.
