Plan to Fix Weldment Issue
Needless to say the gear leg weldment issue is at a breaking point. After looking more closely at the right weldment I realized that I'll probably have to replace it too because I drilled it with the back part of the weldment not flush on the center section web.
This picture is upside down, but you can see that the back of the weldment is .15 off the web. The plans have you put a washer between the weldment and the only lower AN4 bolt, so obviously there should be a little gap...but I think mine is a little more than acceptable. I wouldn't know because there's no indication on the drawing how far off the web it should be. I called Van's technical support today and they indicated that it should be flush, so I really don't understand why the plans call for a washer between the weldment and the web. What the heck. Anyway, these weldments are about $170+ dollars each so I've come up with a clever plan to fix them.
First step is to put the weldments up here (only one shown here).
Then use this...
Stay tuned...you'll see what I have in mind.
