Drilled Left Flap
Today I started out working by match-drilling the flap skins to the ribs and spar. The first thing was to drill out the rear of the ribs to the built-in spar that's bent into the bottom skin.
Then I started trying to figure out how the hinge goes on. Well, the hinges provided are about a foot or so too long and the plans don't mention trimming them...but it's sort of a given! The only question was how long to trim it. There's not really an indication in the plans..but one of the drawings seems to indicate that it's trimmed to about the same length as the spar...
So I trimmed it and then drilled it to the spar and skin, one rivet at a time.
Then I clecoed on the top skin and drilled it to the understructure...then to the row of bottom rivets that join the two skins.
Then I sort of realized....ooops.
I didn't dimple these before riveting on the bottom skins because I thought that I should wait since I've gotta match-drill the hinge to the skin and the flap brace. I have no idea what gives here. Chicken and egg problem definately, though.
Also this is strange. At first, I was thinking that the hinge got riveted between the flap brace and the skin, but the plans show it on the other side of the flap brace. That's what I wasn't very concerned with this distance here, because the hinge between it seems to make it feel well. I have no idea what's going on here....but....
It's the same issue for the right wing! Gotta post this to some message boards and see what comes back!
