Cracked Canopy, Proposed Fix
Yeah, I broke the canopy, but I'm trying not to let it get me down.
I cracked it originally when I was installing my Koger sunshade and I was standing on the wing with the canopy propped up on the secondary latch and I leaned into it. It cracked from the base up to the stop drill hole you can see in the picture. Then last night while I was stepping up onto the right my canopy came down on my hand which was on the rollbar. It caused the canopy to twist and the cracked area to hit the rollbar and the entire piece just snapped off and went sliding across the wing. As you can imagine, my heart just sank.
I have a plan. I will start by gluing the canopy piece back onto the canopy frame (maybe JB weld? Gotta check to see what's safe on acrylic). Then I will put a fiberglass strip around the aft-portion of the tip-up canopy.
On the factory demonstrator you can see the type of strip I'm talking about. Many people have cracked their canopies in the same place I did. I personally know of two that had to do this type of strip because their engine kicked-back. I've always been careful to start my engine with the canopy fully latched to prevent this from happening. Oh well.
